What can I say, this place is breathtaking and anyone who is interested in Wats and / or ancient history should give Sukhothai a visit. It is easy to reach from Phitsanulok as a day trip, or lots of places to stay in the area too.
Sukhotai was the first capital of Thailand and lasted as so for a couple of hundred years (from the 13th century). The name means rising happiness, and it was deemed that the people who lived in the area at the time were some of the happiest Thais ever; guess leading on to the ‘land of smiles’. The ruins of the site cover an area of 45 square kilometres. The site at Sukhotai predates those of Ayuthaya and Angkor.
